Tucked away in the Eje Cafetero/coffee region of Colombia lies the little town of Salento. This town has become a major stop for travelers due to its proximity to the famous Valle de Cocora, myriad coffee farms, and stunning views of the area’s rolling green hills. Our experience in Salento was amazing, and one of the major reasons for that was our hostel, La Serrana Hostel and Eco-Farm.
The Medellin Metro is unusually beautiful. It’s above ground and, thanks to the hills it winds through, it offers some absolutely stunning views of the sprawling Medellin cityscape. Plus, you can get amazing views of the city from above by taking the Gondolas – they’re like an enclosed ski lift. For under $5 each, we were able to see the entire city of Medellin just by riding the rails, hopping on and off as we pleased, and taking the gondolas! Here’s how to see the city of Medellin in a day for under $5.
I’m writing this from an open air hut, swaying on a hammock. Nearby is a pool, complete with waterfall and slide. In front of me is our beautiful cabana nestled in foliage and trees. Around us we hear various birds, water trickling or splashing, and some mysterious animals we haven’t actually been able to see scuttling through the jungle. It’s hard to believe this is anywhere near a city. But we’re only about an hour outside of Santa Marta, Colombia, a bustling city that we passed right through on our way to paradisaical Eco Hostel Yuluka, just outside the entrance to Colombia’s famous Parque Tayrona. Little did we know that we’d end up liking our hostel more than the tropical, remote beaches of Parque Tayrona…
When it comes to your partner or companion, it’s important to be able to read each other. Lia and I have a few different check-ins that we say to each other that hold different meanings in our partnership. One of them is “Is this surfing?” This is the story of the birth of that expression, and a lesson of caution about trying new things. At least, that’s how I introduce this story. Lia likes to call it “that time I almost got stung to death by a million jellyfish.”
One of the most important people you will meet in your life is your travel companion. We didn’t realize we were perfect adventure partners at first. We had to find our stride. And we found that stride after a diabolical rock, a totaled car, mountain stoners, a broken French Press, and a 10 hour ride in a tow truck.
